- The product in 3D: neither its finishes, nor its sizes, nor what changes when a button is pressed.
- The options inside the configurator: the series, the colours and the extras the visitor chooses are not text on the page.
- The calculated price, the rule warnings and the generated PDF.
- Augmented reality and what happens on the customer's phone.
3D configurators and SEO
how to rank
the configurable product.
A 3D configurator does not rank on its own. The search engine does not turn the product or change finishes: it reads the text, the headings, the image names and the speed of the page that wraps it. AI assistants do the same when they recommend a manufacturer. What the search engine sees of a configurator and what it does not, the six things we do so that the configurable product shows up on Google and in AI assistants, and why the customer's questions rank better than the 3D.
What the search engine sees
of a configurator, and what it does not.
The 3D is a canvas drawn in the visitor's browser. To the search engine it is an empty box.
- The address of the page and its title and description.
- The text around the configurator: what the product is, who it is for, sizes, options, questions with answers.
- The images with their file name and their alt text, and the image that appears when the link is shared.
- The links that reach the page from the rest of the website, from the guides and from the network's websites.
- The speed at which the page responds on the phone.
Six things we do
so that the configurator ranks.
None of them is about the 3D. All of them are about the page that wraps it and how it is linked.
One page per configurator or family
Every configurator lives at its own address, with a title and description that say which product it is and who it is for. “Design your made-to-measure pergola” is not a button hidden on the home page: it is a page the search engine can show.
What the customer searches for, written down
What the product is, sizes, series, finishes, what use, what is included and the questions with a short answer. It is the same text an AI assistant later reads to recommend you.
And an image to share
Screenshots of the product with a file name and alt text that say what is shown; and a preview image so that the link, when shared on WhatsApp or social media, shows the product. Every shared configuration is a link that goes round.
The 3D loads when it is looked at
The page opens with its text and its photo; the configurator loads when the visitor reaches it. The search engine measures the first, and the light model means the second does not penalise on the phone.
From the product pages, the guides and the network
Every product page links to its configurator; every blog guide does too; and every distributor who embeds it in their website with their code is one more link pointing to your product.
Product and questions, marked up
The page carries the product data and the questions with answers marked up so that search engines and AI assistants understand them without guessing, and a readable summary of the catalogue for the assistants. That is how our own website is built.
What really ranks:
the customer's questions.
Nobody searches for “configurator”. They search for how many boxes of tiles they need, which power supply their LED strip takes or how many pallets fit in a lorry.
The customer who ends up configuring starts with a question. If your website answers it with a short guide and, at the end, lets them work it out in the configurator, they find you in the search engine and in the AI assistant, and arrive already half convinced. If you only have the configurator, they do not arrive: the search engine had nothing to show them.
That is why each of our 48 demo configurators has a guide that answers its customer's question, and every guide ends in the configurator. It is the structure we build for a manufacturer: the configurator page, the guides that answer the questions about their product and the links between them.
And for AI assistants to recommend you, the same with more clarity: short answers, figures and conditions in writing, no beating about the bush. See 3D configurator company and the 106 questions with a short answer we use ourselves.
Search engines and AI assistants:
the same, more clearly.
What makes a search engine show you is what makes an AI recommend you. With three additions.
| What | For the search engine | For the AI assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Page text | Which product, who for, sizes and options | The same, with figures and conditions in writing (price from, lead time, what is separate) |
| Questions with answers | They appear as rich results | They are what the assistant quotes when asked |
| Permission to read | Bots allowed in the robots file | Express permission for the assistants' bots in the same file |
| Site summary | Sitemap with every page | A readable summary of the catalogue and the key pages, in a text file |
| Images | File name and alt text | The alt text is the only thing it reads |
Development starts from €6,500 for a visual configurator of one product family; most manufacturer projects fall between €14,500 and €35,000, depending on catalogue, rules and integrations, plus maintenance from €190/month. The page that wraps the configurator, with its text and its questions, is part of the project; the product guides are written with you.
What we get asked
about SEO and configurators.
There are more short answers in frequently asked questions about 3D configurators and who we are in 3D configurator company.
Does a 3D configurator help SEO?
On its own, no: the search engine does not see the 3D or the options. What helps is the page that wraps it (own address, title, text, named images, questions with answers), the links it receives and the speed. And it helps a lot for every product to have a guide that answers the customer's question and ends in the configurator.
Does the configurator slow down the page and get penalised on Google?
Not if it loads when the visitor reaches it and the model is light. The page opens with its text and its photo at the usual speed, which is what the search engine measures, and the 3D loads afterwards.
What text should go around the configurator?
What the customer searches for: what the product is, who it is for, sizes, series, finishes, what is included, price from if you give one, and questions with a short answer. It is the same text AI assistants later read to recommend you.
How do I get AI assistants to recommend my product?
With the same as for the search engine, more clearly: short answers with figures and conditions in writing, express permission for the assistants' bots in the robots file, and a readable summary of the catalogue. It is what we apply on our own website.
Do the configurations customers share count?
Every shared configuration is a link with its preview image that goes round WhatsApp, email and social media. It is not a link the search engine counts as such, but it brings visits and, on the product pages and on the distributors' websites, the links to the configurator do count.
How much does a configurator that ranks cost?
Development starts from €6,500 for a visual configurator of one product family; most manufacturer projects fall between €14,500 and €35,000, depending on catalogue, rules and integrations, plus maintenance from €190/month. The page that wraps the configurator, with its text, questions and marked-up data, is part of the project. Details in the price of a 3D configurator.
